Merging joins several PDFs end to end into one file. It is the tool people reach for most often after scanning, because a document that arrived as twelve separate captures needs to become one record before it is filed.
Files are joined in the order shown, so arrange them first. If a merged file comes out in the wrong sequence, Organize Pages will fix it without re-merging.
A password-protected PDF cannot be merged while it is encrypted. Run Remove Password on it first, then merge.
Some merges drop the bookmarks from the source files. If the combined document needs navigation, rebuild it with Edit Table of Contents afterwards.
If two source PDFs both contain a field called 'name', the merged file can behave oddly. Flatten each form before merging if the answers are already final.
Merging is not the only way to combine documents. If you only need a few pages from each source, Extract Pages first and merge the extracts - the result is smaller and easier to read. If the two documents should sit on top of each other rather than one after another, for example content onto a letterhead, use Overlay PDFs instead. And if you are combining images rather than PDFs, Image to PDF does it in one step without a separate merge.
There is no fixed count. Very large jobs are limited by your device's memory rather than by the tool, so merging a few hundred small files is normally fine while a handful of very large scans may be slower.
No. Merging copies each page across as it is. Nothing is re-compressed, so text stays selectable and scans keep their original resolution.
Not directly. Remove the password first, then merge.
No. Pages are copied across unchanged, so text stays selectable and scans keep their original resolution. Nothing is re-compressed.
Not directly. Convert the Word file with Convert File to PDF first, then merge the two PDFs.
The order shown before you press merge. Sort by name or by date if that matches the sequence you want, or drag them manually.
Large jobs are limited by your device's memory rather than a fixed cap. If a merge fails on a very large batch, merge in groups and then merge the groups.
These tools handle one document at a time. When the job is thousands of files, Greenbooks handles document digitization as a managed service, including bulk scanning, OCR and metadata capture, with the output loaded into DocuVenta DMS. Talk to us about volume work.
