Splitting cuts a single PDF into several smaller ones at page breaks you pick. It is the opposite of merging, and the usual reason is that one long scan actually contains several separate records that each need their own file.
Splits are counted from page 1 of the source file, not from the start of each section, so plan the breaks against the full document.
Splitting a 20-page file at 5 and 12 gives you 1-5, 6-12 and 13-20. The break page belongs to the file before it.
After splitting, bookmarks in each part may reference pages that are no longer there. Check navigation on long documents.
If the source has been through OCR, every resulting file stays searchable. If it has not, none of them will be.
Which split tool you want depends on what decides the break. Split PDF is for breaks you choose by page number. Auto Split Pages detects them for you, including from scanner separator sheets. Split by Size or Count is for a limit rather than a place, which is what you need to get under an upload cap. Split by Chapters uses the document's own bookmarks. And Split by Sections divides within a page rather than between pages, for spreads captured two-up.
Enter the page numbers you want to cut at. Splitting at 5 and 12 in a 20-page file gives you three documents: pages 1 to 5, 6 to 12, and 13 to 20.
Yes. Use Auto Split Pages, which writes every page out as its own file without needing you to list the breaks.
No. If the PDF has already been through OCR, each resulting file keeps its text layer.
Use Auto Split Pages, which writes every page out as its own file. Split PDF is for breaks you nominate yourself.
Yes. Splitting copies pages across untouched, so there is no re-compression.
Split by Size or Count, setting a maximum below your mail server's attachment limit. Compress the file first if a single page still exceeds it.
The outputs are named from the source. To name them from their content, run Auto Rename PDF afterwards.
These tools handle one document at a time. When the job is thousands of files, Greenbooks handles document digitization as a managed service, including bulk scanning, OCR and metadata capture, with the output loaded into DocuVenta DMS. Talk to us about volume work.
